Francis Hustwick
A Brief Review by Sam Davidson

This little known and still neglected Liverpool marine painter started as a journeyman painter at Hull, a busy seaport on England's east coast, and settled in Liverpool as a marine painter about 1846. The full significance of his contribution to 19th century maritime art has only recently been unravelled. For additional information see Marine Art & Liverpool a Postscript - 50 Ship Paintings by Francis Hustick. Look out for our next article on Robert Salmon.

Paintings by Francis Hustwick may be viewed at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Pier Head, Liverpool, as listed and described in the Illustrated Catalogue of Marine Paintings by the Museum's Curator of Paintings, Anthony J. Tibbles, Jones-Sands Publishing 1999. In the catalogue (prior to Hustwick being unmasked) the paintings are classified under "Associate of Joseph Heard ['old Ensign']. The New Brunswick Museum, Saint John, New Brunswick Museum, CANADA, and the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath Me, USA, also have examples of the artist's works.
