There followed
a fascinating exercise in maritime detection, assisted by
timely contributions from interested colleagues in the UK,
the USA, and Canada. Two years later a fully illustrated and
detailed report of the evidence and events relating to this
story of marine art detection, was published under the title "Marine Art & Liverpool
- A Postscript - Fifty ship paintings by Francis Hustwick
(1797-1865)" . Further paintings have since emerged
and the current score of some sixty-four paintings attributable
to Francis Hustwick now include thirteen portraits of American
vessels. Apart from a solitary atypical exception, none of
his ship portraits of British vessels are signed. However,
three of the thirteen US ship portraits bear a legible signature,
although in two instances the surname had been previously
misinterpreted as 'Hasbrouk' and 'Hustwich'. Almost certainly
other Hustwick paintings still await recognition or re-attribution,
especially in North America. A current example to surface
in the United States, is an imposing 28" x 42" unsigned
painting of the well-known US ship 'Sirocco' (click to view the painting) which displays all the classic
characteristics of Francis Hustwick (1797-1865).
