Viral Infections of the Foetus & Neonate

Viral Infections of Childhood

Rubella virus and the foetus, the herpes group of viruses, parvovirus B19. Other viruses affecting/infecting the foetus (HBV, HCV, HIV, enteroviruses [coxsackie and ECHO]). Mention will be made of Toxoplasma and Chlamydia. Diagnosis of congenital infections, treatment and prevention strategies.
The skin as a reactive organ, dermatological responses; Poxviruses (structure and function, replication and pathology); lessons from Smallpox - eradication of disease); Measles virus -a common childhood exanthem, prevention and eradication by vaccination; Parvovirus B19 virus - childhood infections and effects in pregnancy; rhabdoviruses, ocular infections, important viruses, diagnosis, antiviral treatment and prevention; exanthematous and ocular infections in the immunocompromised host.
