6. Viral and Prion Infections of the Nervous System (12 credits)
Viral and Prion Infections of the Nervous System

Introduction to nervous system (NS) pathology; clinical features of neuronal disease; syndromes associated with NS disease (meningitis, acute encephalitis, meningo-encephalitis, post-viral encephalitis, peripheral neuropathies); viruses most commonly involved in NS infections (including Rabies); viruses less commonly involved in NS disease, diseases with multiple aetiologies (e.g. Guillain-Barre syndrome); diagnosis of NS infection (serology and significance of CSF/serum antibody levels, culture, limitations of conventional diagnostic methods, and novel techniques); treatment and prevention (vaccines and antivirals); safety aspects of dealing with NS infections.
Conventional viruses and "slow" NS disease (e.g. measles, polyomas, retroviruses), significance in the immunocompromised host; unconventional agents in man and animals (Prions e.g. CJD, Kuru, Scrapie, BSE, nvCJD); pathology and clinical features of "slow virus"/prion infections; modes of transmission; problems of diagnosis; suggested structure and composition of Prions; prevention of disease; safety aspects and restrictions.
